The regular season is over. Neither Jefferson nor Washington could find enough wins to finish with better than a .500 record. But both are involved in postseason play, courtesy of a three-team Class AAA Sectional bracket that places the Cougars, with their 10-12 record, the Patriots, with their 8-14 record and Hampshire, with its 1-21 record, together as a threesome.
Two of those teams with their current losing records will advance to Regional play with a chance to win a game and go to the eight-team state tournament.
Hampshire lost every time it saw either Jefferson or Washington but still opened Sectional competition on Wednesday, Mar. 1, with a game against Jefferson in Shenandoah Junction. The survivor of that first-round game moved on to play Washington tonight at Washington at 7 p.m.
Even if it loses its only Sectional game Washington moves on to Regional play. That's because both the winner and loser of the Washington vs. Jefferson/Hampshire enter Regional play next week.
In the Regional, the schedule has the champion and runner-up of the Jefferson/Washington/Hampshire Sectional facing the winner and runner-up of the Section that has top-seeded, Martinsburg (with a 14-8 overall record), second-seeded Musselman (with a 19-3 overall record) third-seeded Hedgesville (with an 18-4 overall record) and Spring Mills (with a 9-12 overall record).
Hedgesville lost all four of its games against Martinsburg and Musselman.
Hedgesville played at Musselman on Wednesday, Mar. 1, and Spring Mills was at Martinsburg on that same night.
The winners of those two games will play at site of the highest-seeded remaining team with both of them facing the teams coming from the Jefferson/Washington/Hampshire Section.
Each Sectional winner faces the runner-up team from the other Section.
Each winner of the two champion versus runner-up games will qualify for the state tournament in Charleston.
In its last three regular season games, Jefferson suffered a 69-57 loss to Musselman, defeated Hampshire in Romney, 59-56, and was beaten by Silver Oak Academy of Keymar, Maryland, 57-56.
Washington lost three of its last four regular season games -- falling to Jefferson, 54-50, on the road, dropping a 63-54 decision at Martinsburg, losing 50-36 at home to Hedgesville and defeating Spring Mills, 60-58, on the road.
