Shepherd Hall of Fame adds five more athletes

SHEPHERDSTOWN — The Shepherd Athletic Hall of Fame recently swelled its overall number to 155 with the addition of five athletes, who all performed well for the Rams more than 10 years ago.
High-scoring forward Danley Shank from the men’s basketball team (2002-2007) was an All WVIAC first-team selectee in one season. He converted 90.5 percent of his free throws in one season. Shank was a three-time team captain and scored 1,560 points in his career. He claimed 510 rebounds over his four-year career.
Lynn Hrbek Clark was a two-year volleyball captain. She played from 1991 through 1994. Clark was an All WVIAC first-team selection one year. Each of the four seasons she played, Clark led the Rams in assists.
Softball player Mia Zappacosta Byrd was a standout performer from 2004-2007, making the All WVIAC first-team for four straight seasons.
She was named twice as Shepherd’s Female Athlete of the Year. Shepherd won the WVIAC title in 2007, her senior season. She graduated with four career statistical records as well as three single-season statistical category records.
Football’s Clay Grove played from 1990-1993 and the Rams won two WVIAC championships during his playing career.
He was a first-team All WVIAC selection in 1993 and a second-team All WVIAC selection in two years. He had 383 career tackles, including 179 solo tackles.
Wide receiver Kelvin Stevens played from 1993 to 1997. Shepherd had two conference championships in Stevens’ four years of football.
He was a two-time captain. Stevens was selected to the second-team All WVIAC squad in two different seasons. While helping the Rams to their two league titles in his four years, Stevens had 115 career receptions and totaled 22 touchdowns.
The five newest Hall of Fame selections will be honored at a banquet on Oct. 18 at the Storer Ballroom on the Shepherd campus. The quintet also will be honored at the West Chester-Shepherd football game on Oct. 19, as part of the Hall of Fame Weekend festivities.
The Hall of Fame Banquet will begin with a social hour at 6 p.m., followed by the dinner and induction ceremony at 7 p.m. Tickets are $50 and will be available for purchase on Sept. 1 through the Shepherd Office of Alumni Affairs by calling 304-876-5524.
