Offensive day keeps Rams in PSAC hunt

By Bob Madison - For the Chronicle | Oct 15, 2021

SHEPHERDSTOWN — With 638 yards of total offense and 10 touchdowns, Shepherd routed Lock Haven, 75-21, in a PSAC game that saw the Rams score 31 points in the second quarter alone.

The cruise-control victory enabled Shepherd to stay in the thick of the league’s East Division race for a place in the conference championship game on Nov. 13.

Scoring almost immediately after accepting its first possession, the Rams began an afternoon of almost non-stop offense — even when not throwing any passes during the last 20 minutes of the second half that had Ram reserves everywhere you looked.

From a 17-0 lead after one period, the Rams spurted out to a 48-7 lead by halftime of the game that had almost as many Shepherd followers in attendance as those who claimed an allegiance to the homestanding Bald Eagles.

Of Shepherd’s massive total offense figure, 330 of those yards were accounted for by the 17 pass completions of Tyson Bagent, whose five TDs left him with 27 in just six games. Bagent threw for two scores to Ryan Beach and Ronnie Brown with Josh Gontarek taking the other passing score.

Brown had a third score on a six-yard run. He totaled 90 ground yards on 10 carries. Chantz Swartz had TD runs of 32 and four yards and finished with 131 rushing yards on only 13 carries.

Helping the Rams amass 308 rushing yards was Avaughn Holley who scored twice and had 79 yards on 10 carries. Holley had missed the previous two games against Kutztown and Shippensburg.

Now 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference’s East Division, Shepherd needs some help in overhauling Kutztown, now 3-0 in the East and owners of a 37-29 win over the Rams. Lock Haven is 1-5 overall and has yet to win the PSAC.

Scoring points with almost every possession, the Rams already had rollicked to 421 yards of offense by halftime. Bagent had 265 passing yards and four scores before the intermission. Shepherd had collected 17 first downs and the Bald Eagles had four.

Defensively, the Rams had Chrys Lane with the most tackles (7), produced three sacks on Lock Haven’s freshman quarterback and secured pass interceptions from Isaiah Nixon and Tyron McDade.

Hayden August-Scriven booted a 44-yard field goal as well as a successful 22-yarder. He connected on all nine of his extra point attempts.

The Rams are at Millersville this weekend to see the Marauders, an East Division opponent with but one win. On Oct. 23, the nationally ranked Rams return home to face West Chester, a 34-18 loser at Shippensburg last week.

Shepherd’s “business” trip to Lock Haven had been a success — with a bushel of reserves receiving nearly team-wide, generous playing time and the Rams shoving their recognized overall record to 5-1.
