Former Shepherd guard Beeman helps Marshall to top of Sun Belt Conference

Beeman
HUNTINGTON — In Abby Beeman’s last year (2022) at Shepherd University, the Rams claimed a 25-8 overall basketball record and she averaged 19 points a game.
Beeman hailed from Frankfort High School in Mineral County and had scored over 2,200 points in four years there.
At Shepherd, she scored 1,220 points in just two seasons while often playing nearly all 40 minutes of any game.
As a sophomore with the Rams, she set the school record with 267 assists and became the second all-time leader in steals for any season with 95.
After her second season at Shepherd, she transferred to Marshall University.
The Thundering Herd went 17-14 a year ago before moving into the Sun Belt Conference for the first time here in the 2023-2024 season.
Marshall is currently riding along with a 17-6 overall record (through Feb. 15) and is atop the Sun Belt with an 11-1 league mark.
In her first season as the Thundering Herd’s starting point guard, she scored 13.9 points a game and played 35.6 minutes per game. Her 5.6 assists a game easily paced the team.
This season, she is scoring more with a 16.4 points per game showing while converting 47.9 percent of her field goal attempts. Beeman is making 74.6 percent of her free throws and despite being only 5-foot-4 and again being the team’s point guard she is also averaging six rebounds a game (totaling 139).
Her assists number 140 and she has a team-leading 54 steals.
Even if Marshall does not earn the Sun Belt’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, the Herd could be granted an at-large berth into the chase for the national championship.
Marshall has five conference games remaining after just playing on Feb.15. It’s last regular season game comes on March 1 at home at the Henderson Center against Georgia Southern.
The Sun Belt Conference tournament will be played in Pensacola, Fla. from March 5-11.
Beeman will be in for some Sun Belt individual honors after reaping all-conference rewards for both her two seasons at Shepherd, including being voted the PSAC’s Freshman of the Year following the 2020 season.
