MORGANTOWN — After grabbing an armload of non-conference wins to begin its baseball season, West Virginia University started into Big 12 play, beating Oklahoma State University on the road. Two games were postponed at Oklahoma State and then the Mountaineers came home to face the University of Arizona in a three-game series.
After losing a grueling 16-inning game to the Wildcats, the Mountaineers took an 11-3 win to even the series. Arizona won the rubber game, 11-4, to leave WVU with a 19-3 overall record and a 2-2 Big 12 Conference record.
There have been no fewer than 16 pitchers that have made at least three appearances, with reliever Chase Meyer now showing a 4-1 record and Griffin Kirn having a 3.41 ERA in his six starts.
Before this past Tuesday’s home game versus Marshall and yesterday’s series opener at Brigham Young, there were six regulars or semi-regulars who were batting over .300.
Skylar King was hitting .414 and Sam White was at .400.

Jace Rinehart, used mostly as a part-time starter, was hitting .356 and Gavin Kelly was at .320.
Kyle West, another part-time starter, was at .320, Brodie Kresser at .316 and catcher Logan Sauve at .308. Sauve had been injured in the second game against Arizona and missed the series-closing third game.
In the far-flung Big 12 conference (now with 14 schools that sponsor baseball), the Mountaineers don’t play every school. Both Iowa State and Colorado do not have baseball teams, and the Mountaineers don not play Arizona State, Baylor or Texas Christian.
There are still to come three-game series against Utah, Houston, Cincinnati, Central Florida, Texas Tech, Kansas State and Kansas.
The Big 12 Conference season-ending tournament will be played in Arlington, Texas at the home of the Texas Rangers, beginning on May 21.
