Rams blow past Bowie State

Sophomore running back Kenny Williams (Elgin, Ill./Eastern Illinois) rushed 20 times for 93 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead Shepherd University to a 38-17 win over Bowie State in football action at Ram Stadium on Saturday.

Shepherd took a 3-0 lead with 10:28 left in the first quarter when senior kicker Eric Dobratz (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) connected on a 35-yard field goal.

The Rams increased their lead to 10-0 when Williams scored on a seven-yard run with 6:10 left in the first quarter.

Bowie State answered back when Clifton Budd scored on a six-yard scamper with 1:45 left in the first quarter.

Redshirt freshman wide receiver William McKenzie (Upper Marlboro, Md./Frederick Douglass) returned the ensuing kickoff 70 yards for a for a touchdown to increase the Shepherd lead to 17-7.

Budd teamed with Reginald McIntyre on a seven-yard scoring pass with 12:59 left in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 17-14.

The Rams took a 24-14 lead into the break when junior quarterback Bobby Cooper (Davidsonville, Md./South River) found junior tight end John Frick (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) in the back of the end zone for a one-yard scoring pass with 10 second remaining in the half.

Michael Gagne booted a 27-yard field goal for the Bulldogs with 10:17 left in the game to cut the deficit to 24-17.

Williams bulled his way into the end zone from eight yards out with 3:49 left in game and junior cornerback DJ Scott (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) picked off a Bowie State pass and raced 92 yards for a score with 1:17 remaining to seal the win for the Rams.

Cooper completed 7-of-10 passes for 46 yards for the Rams. Clifton Budd and Tyrae Reid combined to connect on 4-of-13 passes for 25 yards for the Bulldogs.

Budd led all rushers with 11 carries for 95 yards. Senior running back Tommy Addison (Germantown, Md./Quince Orchard) added 53 yards on 15 carries for the Rams. Bowie State accumulated 241 yards of total offense while Shepherd had 216. The entire game was played in driving snowstorm conditions.

Junior linebacker A.J. Parrish (Madison Heights, Va./Amherst County) recorded nine tackles and senior outside linebacker Dominic Tolson (Forestville, Md./Central/St. Pauls) added eight to pace the Shepherd defense. Belewele Amadi had eight tackles to lead Bowie State.

Scott and senior cornerback Elijah Davis (Silver Spring, Md./Wheaton) each had a pair of interceptions and junior free safety Corey Washington (Alexandria, Va./Edison) added another to lead the secondary.

Shepherd improves to 7-2, while Bowie State falls to 4-5. The Rams return to action next Saturday when they travel to Glenville State for a noon contest.
