Rams defeat Glenville State
GLENVILLE – Shepherd University handed Glenville State a 37-20 setback in WVIAC football action at Glenville on Saturday.
Shepherd took a 7-0 lead with 12:03 left in the first quarter when junior wide receiver Larry Lowe (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) intercepted a Tanner Collins pass on a fake punt and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown. Senior kicker Eric Dobratz (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) added the extra point.
The Pioneers cut the lead to 7-3 when Colston Bayless connected on a 36-yard field goal.
Junior quarterback Bobby Cooper (Davidsonville, Md./South River) scored on a three-yard run with 7:37 left in the first quarter to increase the Shepherd lead to 14-3.
The Rams took a 21-3 lead minutes later when junior linebacker Dominique Dixon (Westover, W.Va./University)returned an interception 30 yards for a score.
The Pioneers answered back when Darold Hughes raced 34 yards for a score with 29 seconds left in the first quarter to cut the deficit to 21-10.
Dobratz connected on 34-yard field goal with 11:23 left in the second quarter to increase the lead to 24-3.
Hughes connected with Jordan Griffin on a four-yard scoring pass with 8:51 left in the half to cut the lead to 24-17.
Dobratz added a 24-yard field goal with 2:12 left and added a 31-yarder with three seconds remaining in the half to give the Rams a 30-17 advantage at the break.
Bayless nailed a 35-yard field goal for the Pioneers with 10:48 left in the third quarter to cut the lead to 30-20.
Sophomore running back Kenny Williams (Elgin, Ill./Eastern Illinois) scored on a three-yard plunge with 6:43 left in the game to complete the scoring.
The score was set up by a fumble recovery by senior outside linebacker Chris Patton (Mt. Airy, Md./Urbana) at the Glenville 34-yard line.
Cooper completed 17-of-20 passes for 185 yards for the Rams. Darold Hughes connected on 13-of-27 passes for 66 yards for the Pioneers.
Senior running back Tommy Addison (Germantown, Md./Quince Orchard) rushed for a game-high 90 yards on 16 carries for the Rams. Williams added 85 yards on 20 carries. Joe Mesadieu rushed 18 times for 74 yards to lead the Pioneers.
Senior wide receiver Nikkolai Norrell (Richmond, Va./Hermitage) led all receivers with nine catches for 90 yards.
Shepherd totaled 349 yards of total offense while Glenville State had 218.
Sophomore defensive lineman Mike Franklin (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) recorded 11 tackles and senior outside linebacker Dominic Tolson (Forestville, Md./Central/St. Pauls) added seven (all solo) to pace the Shepherd defense. Terry Reese had 12 tackles to lead the Pioneers.
Shepherd improves to 8-2, 5-2 in WVIAC action, while Glenville State drops to 4-6, 4-3. The Rams return to action next Saturday when they travel to Fairmont State for a noon contest.
