Hedgesville edges Jefferson

By Staff | Nov 2, 2012

Jefferson and Hedgesville played an evenly contested contest but Jefferson was unable to complete the comeback losing to the Eagles 28-21. Hedgesville opened the bag of tricks right from the start, opening the game with an onside kick that they nearly recovered. Jefferson’s first drive ended when quarterback Andrew King’s pass was intercepted by a Hedgesville defender. Jeffersons defense looked tough against Hedgesville in the first half. Jefferson defense sacked had a total of 4 sacks in the first half alone. Jefferson defender Will Ransom accounted for three sacks and Dustin Marker had one of those sacks. Jefferson’s defense was able to get to the quarterback but just not enough as Hedgesville was able to put 14 points up on the score board in the first half. Not to be out done Jefferson was able to put a drive together that ended with an Andrew King touchdown pass to Darrod Doleman making the score 14-7.

Early in the third quarter Hedgesville added to their lead with a run right up touchdown run right up the gut make the score 21-14. Jefferson’s running game also showed signs of life. Twice in the game running backs Phillip Keller and Rynal Newman had runs where they carried Hedgesville defenders on their backs for up to five yards of extra yardage. It was this running that set up an Andrew King quarterback keeper for a touchdown in the third quarter that narrowed the score to 21-14. Hedgeville came right back down the field and capped off a long drive with another touchdown run right up the middle making the score 28-14 with only seconds left. Somehow Jefferson was able to add one more touchdown to the score board with an Andrew King touchdown pass to Jordan Hardiman with the game then out of reach. Jefferson attempted an onside kick but it was recovered by Hedgesville. Friday night’s loss drops the Cougars record to 1-8 on the season.
