Hedgesville takes down Jefferson
Jefferson’s Boys basketball season has not gone according to plan thus far. Jefferson’s latest game verse Hedgesville was no different as the Eagles defeated Jefferson 54-26. This latest contest dropped the Cougars record to 1-7, but it was not for lack of effort defensively according to Coach Richard Lewis. “Defensively, I thought we gave effort. These guys were trying. I think offensively we just gotta get better as far as handling the ball.”
Hedgesville made it tough for Jefferson’s offense to function, as they only allowed 26 points the entire game. Jefferson’s leading scoring role was shared by Jalen Smith and Geoff Walker who each had 4 points each. Not only did Hedgesville’s defense contain Jefferson’s scoring but they also forced approximately 15 turnovers for the night.
“We had turnovers in the second half our first four possessions we didn’t get a shot. So that was pretty much it, [and] then the lead was stretched out to 20,” said Lewis.
Hedgesville’s offense exchanged those Jefferson turnovers for points on the other end of the court. Many of Hedgesville’s points came off easy layups and from good shot selection. Leading Hedgesville’s scoring barrage were Juwan Powell with 16 points and C.J Burk who cashed in for 14 points. Hedgesville continues to improve upon their impressive season as their latest win against the Cougars improves their record to 7-0. Hedgesville’s next game will be one of unbeatens when they face a 5-0 Martinsburg team on January 11 at 7:30p.m at Hedgesville High School.
The next time Jefferson hits the hardwood it will be for a 3:30 p.m home game against Parkview High School of Virginia. Jefferson will seek to win this match-up by improving on the offensive end of the court by “being patient, taking our time, [and] getting everyone here [to work as] a cohesive unit,” according to Lewis.
