Jones, McDonald sign as undrafted free agents

By Staff | May 15, 2014

While neither Shepherd’s Howard Jones nor Jefferson High graduate Dewey McDonald were selected in the just concluded NFL draft, both have signed free agent contracts with league teams and will attend mini-camps.

Jones will probably be converted from the defensive end he played at Shepherd to a linebacker. He will attend this week’s Pittsburgh Steelers mini-camp. McDonald, who was an All-America selection in 2013 in his only season at California (Pa.), is a free safety. After playing three seasons at Fairmont and graduating, McDonald played with the Vulcans last season where he returned three interceptions for touchdowns.

West Virginia had two players selected in last week’s three-day draft. Running back Charles Sims was taken in the third round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Defensive lineman Will Clarke was also a third-round selection. Clarke was taken by the Cincinnati Bengals.
