With distance runner Andrew Milliron posting wins in three races and its winning all four relay events, Jefferson outdistanced the other nine boys teams in the Class AAA, Region 2 track and field meet held last week at Buckhannon High in Tennerton.
The four-time defending state champion Cougars amassed 125 points to outpace second-place Hedgesville (74 points) and third-place Washington (69 points).
Milliron won the 800 meters in a time of 2:01.46 and also had a win in the 1600 meters where his pace-setting time was 4:32.33. In the longest of the distance races, the 3200 meters, Milliron’s winning time was 9:50.49.
The Cougars made a clean sweep of the relays — winning the 4×100 with Tanner Cantrell, Robert Douglas, Lawrence Morris and Martinez Grant, outdistancing the field in the 4×200 with Cantrell, Craye Nehler, Dante McCarroll and Douglas, finishing first in the 4×400 with Christian Johnson, McCarroll, Phillip Holliday and Grant, and being powered to victory in the 4×800 relay by Collin Hayes, Rhett Zillinger, Jonathan Royster and Milliron.
Jefferson’s other individual win came from Grant in the long jump where he leaped 22 feet-2.5 inches.
Washington gleaned firsts from Ian MacLeod in the 100 meters (11.44), Derrick Brunson in both the 200 meters (23.03) and 400 meters (50.70) and Adrian Baker in the pole vault where he cleared 13-feet.
Finishing second at the Regional were Jefferson’s Zillinger (800 meters) and Jacobs (3200 meters).
The Jefferson girls also won their division of the Class AAA, Region 2 meet with 125 points. Washington was second among the nine teams entered with 107 points.
Abby Colbert gave the Lady Cougars three individual wins — finishing first in the three distance races. She was timed in 2:25.54 in the 800, in 5:30.15 in the 1600 and 11:20.56 in the 3200.
Jefferson’s Michaela Ashford had a winning long jump of 15-feet-10 inches. The Lady Cougars took a first in the shuttle hurdles with Dayja Grady, Catena Wilson, Brittany Osteen and Elizabeth Starliper. With Anya Wallace, Malika Briggs, Emma Lindburg and Colbert as its foursome of runners, Jefferson won the 4×800 relay.
Washington High runner Devyn Hosby posted wins at the Regional in both the 200 meters (26.19) and 400 meters (59.29). She was second in the 100 meters. Pole vaulter Sara Pifer was the Region 2 winner with a vault of 9-feet-6 inches.
The Patriots had a winning effort from their 4×400 relay team composed of Destiny Harrison, Christina Rogombe, Rhonda Rogombe and Hosby.
Earning second places were the Jefferson 4×100 relay team, the Jefferson 4×200 relay team, Jefferson’s Kenya Price in the high jump, the Lady Cougars’ Briggs in the 1600 distance run and Washington’s Harrison in the 800 meter run.
Next comes the Class AAA state meet in Charleston where the Jefferson boys will defend state championships they won in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013.
