Washington baseball moves on to Regional

By Staff | May 23, 2014

On Monday night, Washington won its second Sectional baseball title in three years when it defeated host Musselman, 3-0, at Applemen Field in Inwood.

The Patriots were 3-0 in the Sectional tournament, getting successive victories over Musselman, Jefferson and then Musselman a second time. Washington will take a 21-4 overall record into the May 27 Class AAA, Region 2 semifinals against defending state champion, Hedgesville. That game will be at Hedgesville with a 7 p.m. start time.

On Monday, the Patriots used the combined shutout pitching of Ryan French and Zac Burch to blank the Applemen. French and Burch combined to allow only two hits, but their six walks gave the Applemen some chances to score.

Protecting only a 1-0 lead, Washington scored twice in the top of the sixth inning. Hunter Weaver drove in a run with a single and Trevor Pansch got an RBI with a sacrifice fly.

The Patriots managed only four hits off Musselman left-hander Chris Schleuss.

The Applemen completed their season with a 17-14 overall record, and were 0-4 against the Patriots this season.
