Even with Andrew Milliron winning both the 1600-meter and 3200-meter runs and amassing 28 individual points and Martinez Grant taking twin firsts in the 400-meter dash and the long jump and scoring 24 individual points, Jefferson High fell 13 points shy of winning a fifth consecutive Class AAA boys state track and field championship.

Parkersburg’s Big Reds overcame a slow first day and edged the Cougars, 93-80, to win their first state title in many decades.

Washington High finished fourth in the team standings with 39 points.

In addition to winning two distance races, Milliron placed third in the 800 run and was a member of the second-place 4×800 relay team.

Grant won the 400-meters in 50.05 and had a leap of 22-feet-5-inches in taking the long jump by over one foot. The senior also was part of the second-place 4×100 relay team whose time was 43.54 and fell just shy of the relay-winning time of 43.47. He also ran the anchor leg of the second-place 4×400 relay unit.

Washington’s Derrick Brunson had a busy final Saturday at Charleston’s Laidley Field when he placed third in the 100, was third in the 200 and had still another third in the 400. The Patriots’ Ian MacLeod gleaned eight points for his second place in the blanket-finish 100 meter finals.MacLeod edged Brunson by .01 of a second and was .03 behind the winner of the dash.

Jefferson’s 4×100 relay team was composed of Tanner Cantrell, Robert Douglas, Lawerence Morris and Grant. The Cougar 4×400 relay team had Christian Johnson, Dante McCarroll, Phillip Holliday and Grant. The 4×800 relay that finished second had Rhett Zillinger, Jonathan Royster, Jackson Jacobs and Milliron.

The Jefferson boys’ track and field teams had won state championships in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 before just falling short here in 2014.
