After transferring to Shepherd for his junior year of college baseball, utility player Spencer Wolfe gave the Rams more than a little bit of everything. Wolfe’s primary position was catcher, but when Shepherd got feeble offensive production at several infield positions, the versatile 6-foot-3, 225-pounder was employed at either third base or shortstop.

When Wolfe thrived, Shepherd thrived.

When Wolfe drove in runs, scored runs and stole 21 bases the Rams won so often that they were the regular season winners of the Mountain East Conference.

The Rams completed their 2014 season with an overall mark of 39-14. Wolfe started all 53 of those games.

Shepherd was the No. 1 seed in the six-team conference tournament and after the regular season was completed in early May the Rams were the No. 1 ranked team in the Atlantic Region.

Shepherd did not win the conference tournament, but only dropped to second in the Atlantic Region ratings and received a bid to the six-team Regional staged in West Lawn, Pa.

Wolfe was named to the all-conference first team. He received more honors when the Atlantic Region selected its all-region teams.

Wolfe’s 53-game statistics showed him leading Shepherd’s offense in eight different categories.

He played in the most games (53), started the most games (53), had the team leadership in runs scored (57), doubles (19), total bases (106), slugging percentage (.624), home runs (7) and sacrifice flies (12).

After only six games, Wolfe was hovering around the .400 batting-average mark.

He would finish the season going 66-for-170 for a .388 average.

This summer, Wolfe is playing for the Front Royal Cardinals of Valley Baseball League.

Earlier this week the league named Wolfe to the North Division All-Star team. The North stars will face the South Division All-Stars on Sunday, July 6 in Harrisonburg.

Wolfe’s .339 batting average attracted the attention of those Valley League officials selecting the two all-star teams.

In his 20 games played through Monday of this week, he was 20-for-59 with 12 runs scored, 10 RBIs, had drawn 11 walks, had 5 doubles and had swiped four bases.

The Cardinals lead the 11-team Valley Baseball League with a 17-6 record, a game ahead of Harrisonburg and 4.5 games in front of the Charles Town Cannons.

Wolfe has one year left at Shepherd, where he will likely be named to several preseason All-America teams and draw preseason Atlantic Region attention.

Wolfe’s bat and versatility already have given him recognition in his own 12-team conference . . . and now he has drawn the attention of officials in the well-scouted Valley League.
