Girl’s basketball league forming for winter season
Several basketball programs exist in Jefferson County geared toward the young players. None of those programs are specifically for girls. Ranson Parks and Recreation will change that with the formation of the first Girl’s Basketball League for ages 5 to 17.
Facility Manager Howard Harder explained that the leagues currently available are co-ed, but there is no league just for girls.
“So many girls tryout for the middle school and high school teams that don’t get a position,” Harder said. “This league will give them someplace to play.” The number of players on the school teams are limited, but the league will be able to expand with extra teams depending upon the number of sign-ups for the program.
All skill levels are welcome in the league with registration currently underway at Ranson City Hall weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Registrations will be taken up through Dec. 7 with practices starting soon after that date. An additional registration date of Dec. 7 from 4 to 6 p.m. has been scheduled at the Ranson Civic Center.
While Ranson Parks and Rec is initiating the league and practices and games will be held at the Ranson Civic Center, participation is open to any girl in Jefferson County.
“We have the Civic Center, a great facility,” Harder said. “We want to make use of it and help the community, the youth and the schools.”
Registration costs are $60 for the first player and $50 for any additional player living in the same household. Each player receives a game shirt.
Harder said that coaches are also needed for the league, as well as referees. Referees must be 16 or older, he said. Anyone interested in serving as a referee or a coach should contact Harder at 304-725-2437 or vial email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
In addition to the girl’s basketball program kicking off, Harder said a co-ed adult volleyball league is also being considered. Sign-ups for that league will be held Aug. 10 at 6 p.m. at the Civic Center. Play will be scheduled on Sundays from September to November.
