Jefferson girls prevail at track and field Regional

By Staff | May 25, 2015

With three relay teams getting wins and distance runner Abby Colbert contributing 28 individual points, the Jefferson girls came away from the Class AAA, Region 2 track and field meet with the team championship.

Scoring 112 points, the Lady Cougars had more firepower than Washington (80 points), Hedgesville (80), Spring Mills (56), Buckhannon (44), Hampshire (43), Martinsburg (41), Elkins (37), Musselman (35) and Lewis County (22).

One of Jefferson’s winning relays — the 4×800 — was comprised of four freshmen in Morgan May, Jordan Phillips, Bailey Phillips and Grace Valentine.

Aaliyah Rice, Michaela Ashford, Alexus Hockman and Aisha Grant were the four runners on the winning 4×100 relay unit. The shuttle relay team that bested the Regional field in that event were Catena Wilson, Elizabeth Starliper, Dayja Grady and Jordan Phillips.

Colbert won both the 1600 run and the 3200 run. She placed second in the 800 run.

Washington’s Rhonda Rogombe won both the 400 dash and the high jump. The Lady Patriots also had Carmine Guynn win the pole vault.

The next station for the girls who qualified in individual events or relays will be the state meet in Charleston.
