Martinsburg edges Jefferson boys in Region track and field

Martinsburg won five events, including several where the meet-winning Bulldogs placed just ahead of runner-up Jefferson, to win the team championship in the boys edition of the Class AAA, Region 2 track and field event.

In winning the long jump, high jump, shuttle hurdles, 4×100 relay and discus events, the Bulldogs finished with 104 points, while second-place Jefferson gathered 97 team points.

Jefferson also won five different events, but saw the Bulldogs finish 1-2 in the long jump and score a narrow victory by .07 parts of a second in the 4×100 relay.

Craye Nehler had a Jefferson win in the 200 meters, Rashad Lee took the 300 meter hurdles, Phillip Keller was best in the shot put, the foursome of Nicholas Mazaleski, Christian Johnson, Trevon Smith and Nehler won the 4×200 relay and Leon Waldron, Zach Hostler, Donald Starliper and Johnson teamed to win the 4×400 relay.

Washington’s Aron Tackett was the pole vault winner at the Regional.

Other teams finishing behind both the Bulldogs and Cougars were Hedgesville (90 points), Musselman (83), Buckhannon (82), Spring Mills (49), Lewis County (19), Washington (18), Hampshire and Elkins.

Jefferson will attempt to reverse its Regional loss to Martinsburg at the upcoming state meet to be held in Charleston at Laidley Field.
