Colbert wins twice in distance races

By Staff | May 29, 2015

None of the county high school track and field teams got to do much celebrating or joining in the carnival atmosphere at last weekend’s Class AAA track and field state meet in Charleston.

Jefferson’s girls team finished fifth, but the best performances of the meet were turned in by the Lady Cougars’ distance runner, Abby Colbert. Of the 33 team points Jefferson accumulated, Colbert grabbed 24 of them with a first place in the 3200-meter run and the 1600-meter run, as well as a fourth-place in the 800-meter distance event.

Hurricane and Winfield both had 81 team points to finish in a tie for first place.

The Jefferson 4×100 relay unit was fourth and the 4×200 relay team was fifth.

Washington finished 10th as a team with 22 points as Rhonda Rogombe won the high jump when she cleared 5-feet-6-inches. Rogombe also earned another six points with a third-place in the 400-meter dash. The Lady Patriots gained six points with a third-place finish in the 4×400 relay.

The Jefferson boys team finished in 18th-place and the Washington boys had only one point as Aron Tackett was sixth in the pole vault.

Most of Jefferson’s 10 team points were achieved when the 4×100 relay unit finished third.

Martinsburg was able to win its first-ever boys track and field state championship.
