Cannons struggling to score runs

The Charles Town Cannons of the Valley Baseball League struggled to score runs through their first seven games of the 44-game summer season.

Charles Town was 3-4 overall and had lost three straight times in games played through Friday, June 12.

Strasburg led the Northern Division with a 5-1 record and the Winchester Royals were in second with a 5-2 record.

Both Charles Town and Front Royal had 3-4 records with Woodstock (2-4) and Aldie (2-5) trailing the division in the early going.

Staunton had a 5-1 record to lead the Southern Division.

The Cannons had lost to Strasburg, 5-0, as Drew Avans got the win for the Express; Front Royal tamed the Cannons, 10-1, with pitcher Patrick Coffin quieting the Cannons’ offense; and Aldie outscored the Cannons, 9-6, even though Christian Khawan went 4-for-4 for Charles Town.

Khawan was batting .375 through seven games and Carlos Matamoros, who had six stolen bases, was batting .250.

Charles Town’s team batting average was .241.

Stephen Solomon had pitched seven innings and had a ERA of 0.00 and Steven Ridings had also pitched seven innings and had a ERA of 0.00.

The Cannons had a team ERA of 3.57 through seven games.
