Stamper, Colbert take to the Forest course

By Staff | Sep 18, 2015

The historic Forest Festival Invitational cross country meet held at Davis & Elkins College in Elkins was treated to individual wins from Jefferson’s Dylan Stamper and Abby Colbert, and it was the Cougars’ boys team that grabbed most of the limelight by taking first place in a field of 14 schools.

Stamper cruised over the course with his winning time of 19:00.68 as the leader of the Jefferson boys team that placed five runners in the top 20 finishers.

Jefferson had a team total of 56 to outpace runner-up Beckley Woodrow Wilson, which had a team total of 68. Finishing third among the teams was Musselman (101), followed by Elkins (119) and Berkeley Springs (138).

Jefferson’s Colin Hayes was sixth overall and second on his team with a time of 19:28.40. Mason Young was 12th overall with Ethan Stead coming in 18th and Nick Whitehair right behind him as the 19th overall finisher.

Colbert won the girls division for Jefferson and had a first-place time of 20:31.38.

Jefferson was fourth as a team in the girls division with Hampshire winning with its team total of 64. Berkeley Springs was the runner-up with 76 and Nicholas County was third with 88. The Lady Cougars had a team total of 101 with Morgan May finishing sixth overall in her time of 23:44.8 and Grace Valentine giving Jefferson a 13th place with her time of 24:27.54.

Jefferson’s other two finishes that counted toward the eventual team total of 101 were the 43th place of Madison Adams and the 44th place of Madeleine Pitcher.

The Forest Festival Invitational individual victory by Stamper was his first in a major event of more than six teams and he showed continued improvement after suffering a leg injury less than a year ago that caused him to miss training because of the injury setback.
