South Charleston ends Jefferson’s football season
The Black Eagles of South Charleston were said to soar past opponents with a pass-based offense.
But when Saturday’s weather came up blustery with a consistent wind in Shenandoah Junction, the game plan was drastically changed and it was along the ground that the Black Eagles damaged Jefferson and sent the Cougars out of the Class AAA football playoffs.
In winning, 28-8, South Charleston registered all four of its scores on the ground with quarterback Kente Grier executing the team’s “read option” offense to near perfection at times. Grier scored three touchdowns himself and C.J. Perkins had the other score on a 55-yard run in the first quarter.
Jefferson had the first scoring opportunity when it marched 68 yards to the Black Eagle two with its initial possession. A fourth-down pass was tipped and there were no points.
However, Grier fumbled in his own end zone, and though he recovered, the play ended in the Cougars recording a safety for a 2-0 lead.
Perkins’ TD run gave South Charleston a 7-2 lead that lasted until halftime.
Jefferson had made inroads inside the Black Eagle 20 on two more occasions, but failed to score both times.
Perkins raced 54 yards to the Jefferson six before Grier scored from the seven giving the Black Eagles a 14-2 lead as the third quarter moved along.
Grier’s 75-yard keeper pushed the Black Eagle lead to 20-2 before Jefferson got its lone touchdown of the afternoon when Christian Johnson scored on a 50-yard reception he made on an Isaac Myers’ throw.
Jefferson’s onside kick was recovered by South Charleston . . . and Grier’s 22-yard touchdown run extended the Black Eagle lead to 28-8.
Myers was sacked five times by the aggressive South Charleston defense.
Jefferson entered the postseason as the No. 6 seed with its 8-2 regular season record. South Charleston came from Kanawha County with a 7-3 regular season record and was the No. 11 seed.
The Black Eagles will be at Wheeling Park (9-1-1 overall) in the second round of the playoffs this weekend.
