Young Jefferson, Washington open basketball seasons

By Staff | Dec 11, 2015

Jefferson has a long list of juniors on its boy’s basketball team, and will have to replace most of its starting lineup from the 2014-15 season.

There are 10 juniors on the 14-player roster. Three seniors and a freshman complete the early-season roster.

Jimmy King is a 6-foot junior and is joined by the nine other juniors — 6-foot-2 Cory Carr, 6-foot-3 Darnell Gardner, 6-foot-7 Juluan Plaza, Michael Bratton, Tavion Fagan, Brandt Lusby, Alex Tennant, Jordan Dragon, and Armonte Craig.

The seniors are 6-foot Zach Larue, 6-foot-2 Ryan Popkins and Marcus Roper. The lone freshman is 6-foot-4 Justin Hall.

Coach Richard Lewis has scheduled several private schools to begin his season, including Silver Oak Academy from Keymar, Maryland, Mercersburg Academy and Broadfording Academy from Hagerstown.

The Cougars remain in the same Class AAA Sectional with Martinsburg, Musselman, Hedgesville, Spring Mills and Washington.

At Washington High, Coach Alex Feliu also has only three seniors on his 12-player roster.

The Patriot seniors are 6-foot Becker Junkin, 6-foot-2 Jonathan McFarlin and 5-foot-11 Jaquez Fields.

There are four juniors on the pre-season roster and they are 6-foot-4 Branden Pitts, 6-foot-3 Hunter Coates, 6-foot-2 Cyle Brown and 5-foot-5 Colby Evers.

Feliu’s sophomores include 6-foot Parker Jackson, 6-foot-2 Connor Reed, 6-foot Trajon Brown, 5-foot-8 Davian Hester and 5-foot-7 Craig Link.

Washington will be at home on December 16 to face Hampshire and returns to its home court on December 18 when it plays James Wood. On December 22, the Patriots will host Sherando and then on Jan. 2 see Martinsburg in another home game.

Like Jefferson, the Patriots are in the same Class AAA Sectional as Martinsburg, Musselman, Hedgesville, Spring Mills and the Cougars.
