By Staff | Mar 11, 2016

After trimming Silver Oak Academy in its final regular season game, the Jefferson boys basketball team went into its Class AAA Sectional play as the No. 5 seed in the six-team tournament. The Cougars faced fourth-seeded Spring Mills and defeated the Cardinals, 63-49, in a quarterfinal game when Jimmy King, Marcus Roper, Alex Tennant and Michael Bratton all scored in double figures.

In the Sectional semifinals, Jefferson lost a 65-49 decision to top-seeded Martinsburg.

The third loss of the season to the Bulldogs left Jefferson with an 8-14 overall record for the 2015-16 season.

Only Tennant reached double figures against Martinsburg, which went on to beat Musselman in the Sectional finals.

In the Class AAA Regional, it was Martinsburg hosting Hampshire and Musselman traveling west to play Lewis County. The winners of those two games reached the eight-team state tournament in Charleston.

Bratton led Jefferson in scoring for the season with an 11.4 scoring average and King was the other player averaging in double figures with his 11.0 average.

Both King and Ryan Popkins averaged a team-best 4.1 rebounds per game for the 22-game season.
