The indignities of a season-opening loss are now two weeks in the past.

After falling behind Millbrook, 42-0, in its first game, Jefferson was able to score the game’s last 20 points but still felt the sting of a 42-20 loss to the Pioneers.

The Cougars had an open date last week and will host Musselman tonight at 7 p.m. in Shenandoah Junction.

Musselman opened its season with a 54-7 win over Spring Mills, but then went on the road and lost, 38-30, to Chestnut Ridge of New Paris, Pennsylvania. Chestnut Ridge had beaten Bedford in its first game and goes to Cumberland to face Allegany this week.

Millbrook improved its record to 2-0 when it defeated Hedgesville last week on the road.

In its only game, the Cougars had never seen an offensive play from Millbrook yet trailed, 21-0.

The Pioneers started quickly when they ran the opening kickoff back 66 yards for a score. When the Cougars were forced to punt on their first series, Millbrook ran it back 82 yards for a second touchdown.

Jefferson’s third series ended abruptly when a pass was intercepted along the sidelines and returned 46 yards for a 21-0 Millbrook lead.

In quick succession, the Pioneers reeled off touchdown runs of 79, 80 and 57 yards from scrimmage. It was a 42-0 game before the Cougars managed to score the game’s last 20 points.

There were two lost interceptions and a lost fumble in the first half.

Jefferson did have 346 yards of total offense with 182 yards coming through the air.

This will be Jefferson’s only home game in its first six games of the 2016 season. The Cougars hit the road for four straight games after seeing the Applemen tonight.
