Trailing early, Jefferson never recovers

By Staff | Sep 30, 2016

Sherando was winless in three games. No longer.

The Warriors scored early and often last Friday to turn back Jefferson, 47-12, as Nathan Wagner scored four times, the first coming only 52 seconds into the game.

Wagner had 238 all-purpose yards while scoring twice on runs and twice on pass receptions.

All that yardage came on just six rushing attempts and two long pass receptions.

After taking a quick-strike, 7-0, lead the Warriors saw Jefferson march 76 yards in just seven plays and get within one point when Isaac Myers scored on a 39-yard run. The extra point attempt failed and Sherando still led, 7-6.

It wasn” too long before the Warriors had a 34-6 lead. Dylan Rivers scored on a four-yard run; Rivers then ran in from the five after a low snap on a Jefferson punt attempt gave the Warriors excellent field position at the Cougar 20.

Wagner grabbed a 47-yard scoring pass and then Sherando recovered a lost Jefferson fumble at the Cougar 17 on the ensuing kickoff. The Sherando lead was soon 34-6.

The other Jefferson touchdown came on a 16-yard Myers-to-Jimmy King pass.

Myers was 15-for-32 through the air for 149 yards. He also ran for 94 yards in Jefferson’s third loss in four games.

Jeremy Beach had 13 carries for 58 yards for the Cougars.

The Cougars are still on the road this week, playing at Handley High in Winchester on Saturday at 1 p.m. The next home game comes on Friday, Oct. 14.
