Young, Whitehair finish one-two at Regional
Mason Young and Nick Whitehair finished one-two in the Class AAA, Region II cross country meet held at Hampshire High School.
The Cougars won the seven-team meet with 27 points with runner-up Musselman next with 66 points.
Jefferson’s Colin Hayes was fifth, Delmar Hagedorn was seventh and Dylan Stamper, who missed almost all of the season, was 12th. Also participating for the Cougars were Asher Personett (13th) and Nathan Starkey (14th).
At the Class AAA state meet in Ona last weekend, the Cougars were sixth as a team as Morgantown was crowned the state champion with 45 points. The Mohigans ran away with the meet where Cabell Midland was second with 100 points, Parkersburg had 121, University 126, Woodrow Wilson 126 and Jefferson 129.
Phillip White of University was the individual winner with George Washington’s Jacob Birurakis following in second place overall.
The top five Jefferson finishers were Young (16th overall), Whitehair (24th), Hagedorn (31st), Hayes (33rd) and Stamper (43rd).
The Jefferson girls team also took the Class AAA, Region II championship in a six-team field.
The individual winner was Hampshire’s Hannah Lipps, who would win the state championship in Ona last weekend.
Jessie Hogbin of Hedgesville was second. Jefferson’s top five finishers were Vanessa Pratt (third), Morgan May (fourth), Jordan Phillips (ninth), Genevieve Sturrock (10th), and Grace Valentine (18th). Madison Adams (22nd) and Samantha Gonzales (26th) also competed for Jefferson.
Jefferson had 43 points and runner-up Hampshire had a team score of 52.
At the state meet in Ona on Oct. 29, the Cougar girls team finished fifth behind state champion University (44 points), Morgantown (62), Cabell Midland (117) and Parkersburg (124). Jefferson had a team score of 159.
Jefferson runners Pratt (21st overall), May (22nd), Phillips (37), Sturrock (47th) and Valentine (53rd) had their place/finishes counted in the meet.
