Roundup: Musselman boys knock off South Charleston

INWOOD – Mussel-man hosted a name team from the Kanawha Valley on Tuesday and made an impression with an impressive 71-59 victory over South Charleston in boys basketball. Both teams entered play undefeated.

South Charleston was ranked fifth in the state and Musselman tied for eighth in The Associated Press preseason poll.

“It’s a big win for us, it sure was” Musselman coach Derek Basile said. “We played well. All of them did. Defensively, we were pretty good. We had four double-figure scorers.

“It was a nice overall effort.”

The Applemen led 44-29 at halftime and increased their advantage to 59-41 after the third quarter. South Charleston trimmed its deficit in the final minute against Musselman reserves.

Cam Stephens and Michael Bratton each scored 16 points to lead the Applemen (5-0). Jake Stephens added 13 points and Latrell Warr 12.

Tamon Scruggs led South Charleston with 18 points. Edgar Phillips added 10, as did A.D. Cunningham.

Boonsboro 44, Jefferson 40

BOONSBORO, Md. – Jefferson fell to the host team in the first round of the Boonsboro Holiday tournament.

The Cougars will play Brunswick, Maryland, in today’s consolation game. James Wood, Virginia, nipped Brunswick 59-58.

Bluefield 55, Martinsburg 36

BLUEFIELD – In a clash of undefeated teams, homestanding Bluefield got the best of Martinsburg.

Bluefield led 27-16 at halftime over Martinsburg, which is in the midst of a two-game southern trip.

The Beavers are 7-0.

Jaisah Smith scored 17 points for Bluefield and Jia Coppola 16

For Martinsburg, which lost its first game after five wins to open the season, Cameron Awkard scored nine points.

BOONSBORO, Md. Musselman dropped a first-round tournament game to James Wood, Virginia, in the Boonsboro Holiday Tournament.
