Cougars go against area AAA teams, lose both times

By Staff | Jan 16, 2017

Jefferson went against a pair of the Class AAA area teams for the first time this season . . . and it lost both games, the first a 54-45 decision against Hedgesville in Shenandoah Junction and then last Saturday, a 57-49 verdict against Spring Mills on the road.

The Cougars were 5-3 overall and 0-2 in games that count toward the eventual seeding of the six schools in the area’s Class AAA Sectional tournament.

Against Hedgesville, the Cougars were victimized by Hedgesville’s free throw shooting in the fourth period when the Eagles made 11-of-14 foul shoots in that quarter

alone.

Hedgesville held a 24-18 lead at the half after once having a 23-11 lead in the quarter.

The Eagle lead grew to 14 points in the third quarter, but Jefferson’s Paris Torelli scored five points in a Jefferson seven-point spree to narrow the Cougars’ deficit to 37-30 after three quarters.

Jordan Dragon scored 12 points, Alex Tennant had eight, Isaac Myers seven points and Torelli seven points to pace Jefferson’s scorers.

The eight-point loss to Springs Mills came in a game postponed from Friday (when there was no school in Jefferson County) until Saturday and staged at the north Berkeley County school.

Springs Mills moved its overall record to 7-2 with the win over the Cougars, who had Martinsburg next on their schedule.
