State Wrestling tournament set

Both Jefferson and Washington qualified wrestlers for this weekend’s state meet in Huntington. Musselman was the team champion in the Class AAA Region 2 meet where the Applemen had 202.50 points to ward off the bid by runner-up Washington, which had 181.50 points. Jefferson was fifth in the seven-team meet with 125.50 points.
Jefferson had individual weight class champions in Noah Marrone (106), Marco Tapia (132) and Alex Liddel (220).
Washington’s weight class winners were Andy Felegie (120), Eric Dreyer (126), Cameron Pine (160) and Jack Bradbury (170).
The runner-ups in weight classes were Washington’s Kevin Echeverria (145) and Jefferson’s Jacob Biller (195) and Jackson Tennant (182). The other state meet qualifiers from Jefferson were Colton White (106), Isaiah Daly (113), Ryan Simpson (126), and Jacob Gamble (170). Washington’s other qualifiers were Dylan Loomis (113), Dimitri Emswiler (132) and Conor Wogan (182).
Cameron Pine will take an unbeaten 46-0 record to the state meet.

At the state swim meet held in Morgantown last weekend, the Jefferson girls team was sixth in the meet won by Wheeling Park. The Patriots had 144 points with Fairmont Senior finishing second with 142 points. Jefferson had 87 points. The best individual or relay finish by any Cougar was the third place turned in by Kaelyn Gardner in the 100-yard butterfly.
The Jefferson boys team finished ninth in a meet won by George Washington. The Patriots registered 166 points with Parkersburg finishing second with 125 points. Jefferson’s team score was 60 points. The top individual or relay finish by any Cougar was the second place from the 200 yard freestyle relay unit comprised of Nick Wiercioch, Cooper Hanson, Ethan Gottlieb and Nicholas Mazeleski.
