Cougars have four-win week, beat Trojans
Returning from Myrtle Beach, Jefferson had a busy and mostly productive week of baseball, especially a 9-4 win over Sectional rival Hampshire in Romney.
The Cougars won four times and lost only a 10-8 decision in the second game of a doubleheader against Frankfort in Short Gap.
David Dinges had a hit-filled week, going 7-for-16 and even scoring two runs in the one game where he didn’t have a hit. Zac Rose, Danny Brennan and Dylan McCartney all had games where they had three hits.
A three-run seventh inning lifted the Cougars to a 3-2 win over Spring Mills at Sager Field. Jefferson has never lost a game to Spring Mills.
Rose’s single in the seventh plated the game-deciding run. Rose had three hits, with Dinges, Cory Daly and Cory Roman each getting two hits. Taylor Tennant pitched the first six innings and fanned 11. James Walsh got credit for the win with one inning of scoreless relief.
A three-run sixth inning proved decisive in a 5-3 win on the road over Musselman. Dinges and Rose had RBI hits in the three-run sixth. Musselman made six errors. Hayden Stang had two hits. Dinges pitched 3.2 innings in relief and was the winner in replacing Jordan Trunnell, who went the first 3.1 innings.
The next night, the Cougars stopped Hampshire, 9-4, as they scored all nine of their runs in the last four innings. McCartney was 3-for-3 and Dinges, Rose and Tennant each had two hits as the Cougars collected 10 hits. Both Hampshire and Jefferson made four errors.
James Walsh pitched into the sixth and, when he couldn’t retire anybody in that inning, Cameron Winston came in to get the last six outs. Rose had three RBIs, with Daly driving in two runs and hitting a home run.
On Saturday, the Cougars were on the road for the third consecutive day. A six-run seventh inning broke a 6-6 tie and provided a 12-6 win over Frankfort in the opening game of a doubleheader. Frankfort committed six errors and Jefferson had four errors.
Tennant had four RBIs and two hits, McCartney was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, pinch-hitter Regan Allinger drove in two runs with his hit, Dinges scored twice, Rose scored twice, Cullen Horowicz had an RBI and Rose had an RBI. Tennant pitched the last three innings to be credited with the win in relief of Rose (one inning) and Horowicz (three innings).
In Saturday’s nightcap, the Cougars were fortunate to get 3.2 innings of quality pitching from Winston to take a 7-4 lead into the bottom of the sixth against Frankfort. But the Falcons had scored three times in the early innings before Winston entered in the second. When he left to begin the Falcon sixth, the Cougar lead quickly evaporated in the face of a four-run Frankfort inning, in which more pitchers struggled with walks.
Frankfort led 8-7 before the Cougars scored a run in the seventh to make it 8-8. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, the Falcons scored the game-deciding runs, ending Jefferson’s four-game winning streak during the week.
Brennan was 3-for-3 and scored three times, Dinges was 2-for-4, Tennant had an RBI and scored a run and McCartney drew two walks.
Jefferson was 10-6 overall and had another game- and road-filled week ahead, beginning this past Tuesday and Wednesday at Hedgesville and Martinsburg.
