Jefferson closes season with win over Patriots
SHEPHERDSTOWN — In scoring the season finale’s first two touchdowns and then the game’s last 33 points, Jefferson denied cross-county opponent Washington any wins in the 2018 season.
The Cougars had a 14-0 lead after one quarter, and went to the dressing room at halftime with a 27-7 lead over the winless Patriots.
Washington had closed to within seven points at 14-7, in the second period before Jefferson quarterback Corbin Pierson scored, to restore a two-touchdown lead.
In notching the game’s final five scores, the Cougars completed a 47-7 win that left them with a 2-8 record for the 2018 season. Washington had a 0-10 mark this year.
Jefferson had the game’s only points in the second half, scoring three touchdowns while blanking the ineffective Patriots.
The Cougars snapped a two-game losing skid to end the season. Playoff entries Martinsburg and South Hagerstown had beaten Jefferson after it erased a 17-game drought with a victory at home over Loudoun Valley, a team that finished with a 1-9 record this season.
Washington was coming off a 3-7 season in 2017, but couldn’t find a win here in 2018.
