SHEPHERDSTOWN — After going through its schedule the first time against Sectional rivals, Jefferson has yet to find a win.

The Cougars were 0-6 through games as of Jan. 27 against Washington, Hampshire, Spring Mills, Hedgesville, Musselman and Martinsburg.

Another game against each of the other Sectional teams remains on the schedule.

The latest losses were to Springs Mills, 52-44, and Washington, 49-37.

Previously, the Cougars had dropped verdicts to Musselman (59-37), Martinsburg (65-28), Hampshire (42-34) and Hedgesville (35-30).

After last week’s loss at home to Spring Mills, the Cougars had yet to defeat a public school this season and had wins over Silver Oak Academy (twice), the St. John’s Saints of Front Royal (twice), Highland View Academy, Broadfording Academy and Faith Christian of Roanoke.

The nine losses were to Heritage (Virginia), Trinity Christian of Morgantown, Tuscarora (Virginia) and to all six of the other area Class AAA teams in Jefferson’s section.

Unbeaten Martinsburg currently has the best record of the area Class AAA schools.

Two of the local sectional teams will advance to the Class AAA Regional tournament. Both of those teams could then advance on to the eight-school State Tournament, where both Martinsburg and Musselman qualified for the Charleston-based event in 2018. Martinsburg reached the championship game of the state tournament, but was beaten in that round.

In the seven-team Sectional Tournament, the teams are seeded with the No.1 seed, receiving a bye into the second round. The other six teams must play a first-round game. The two teams finishing first and second in the Sectional Tournament both move on to the Regional.
