SHEPHERDSTOWN – After missing a game at Spring Mills last week, Jefferson finished its regular season with a 66-30 loss to Musselman and a 62-28 loss to Martinsburg.

In its 11 games with schools from Berkeley, Jefferson or Hampshire counties, the Cougars had a 2-9 record.

Before wins over Washington (52-46) and Hampshire (61-43) at home, the Cougars had suffered a 55-23 loss in Shenandoah Junction to Hedgesville. Hedgesville had a highly unusual beginning to the game, taking a 30-0 lead over the Cougars before Jefferson could score a point.

Jefferson’s two wins over area teams were against Hampshire and Washington, the other two teams in its Class AAA Section.

The Cougars finished with a 2-2 record in games versus Washington and Hampshire, and was voted the No. 1 seed for the Sectional tournament.

Unbeaten Martinsburg (22-0) is the No. 1 seed in the other area Sectional tournament, with Hedgesville getting the No. 2 seed, Musselman the No. 3 seed and Spring Mills the No. 4 seed.

Jefferson was given a bye in its section, with Washington and Hampshire playing each other in the first round. The survivor of the Washington vs. Hampshire game would have to play at Jefferson.

With its No. 1 seed, Martinsburg hosted Spring Mills and No. 2 seed Hedgesville hosted Musselman.

The highest remaining seed would host the Sectional championship game.

Jefferson completed its regular season with a 9-12 record. In its 12 losses, the Cougars averaged 34.8 points a game.
