SHEPHERDSTOWN — On Feb. 6, Jefferson was staring at a week that had it playing four games in five days. And three of those games were on the road, including a Saturday date in Lewisburg against Greenbrier East.

The Cougars were 12-0 and the only unbeaten Class AAAA team in the state.

After routing Spring Mills, 85-42, in its only home game of the week, the Cougars won, 68-57, over Hampshire in Romney, then over Washington, 70-53, on the road and lastly a 71-60, success against Greenbrier East, to leave the game-heavy week with a 16-0 record and only four games remaining on the regular season schedule.

This week, the Cougars faced a Martinsburg team they earlier romped past, 97-68, on Tuesday and then were to play visiting Buckhannon on Saturday at 4 p.m.

In stampeding Spring Mills by some 43 points, the pressure loving Cougars got 20 points from sophomore Jaiden Gladney, 11 from Cam Johnson and 10 from senior point guard Daion Taylor — the ringleader of the team’s fullcourt pressure defense.

Jefferson started slowly in Romney versus Hampshire, trailing 10-5 after one quarter. But then the Trojans began to falter against the full court pressure and saw Jefferson score 28 points in the second period to lead 33-26 at the half. When the Cougars pressured their way to 22 points in the third period, they took a 55-38 lead into the fourth period.

Against Washington — a team with just one win this season — Jefferson bolted to a 34-17 lead at the half. Jefferson owned an 88-49 win over the beleaguered Patriots on their home court in Shenandoah Junction.

Taylor’s steals and subsequent driving layups were a signature part of that game.

After three wins in four nights, the Cougars set off for Greenbrier County, where they met a Spartan team that had fallen, 70-57, to them in Shenandoah Junction on Jan. 22. The Spartans were 8-9 before losing a second time to Jefferson.

The 11-point, road win last Saturday shoved Jefferson’s record to 16-0 and positioned the Cougars ever closer to a perfect regular season record.

If the Cougars are still undefeated after this week’s games against Martinsburg and Buckhannon, the final week of the regular season will see them travel to Berkeley County to see take aim at Spring Mills on Tuesday and then host Broadfording Academy (Maryland) on Feb. 25.

Jefferson is in a three-team Class AAAA Sectional along with Musselman and Washington. In the Regional, in addition to the Sectional teams are Springs Mills, Martinsburg and Hedgesville.

Once the Regionals are decided, the eight teams qualifying for the state tournament will be seeded and all gather in Charleston, where they will attempt to win three games and the state championship.

Jefferson has never recorded an unbeaten regular season since the school began playing basketball in the 1972-1973 season. In the history of the school, a Jefferson team has only won one game in any state tournament that has been held.

History could be just over the horizon should the Cougars wade through their last four regular season games.
