Baseball Cougars take 18-1 record to the beach
SHENANDOAH JUNCTION — It’s baseball by the waves for Jefferson High School this week when the Cougars spent Spring Break Week in Myrtle Beach, S.C. for four games.
After winning games in a rapid-fire order, the team record crisply moved to 18-1.
Last Friday, Jefferson was able to sweep a homefield doubleheader against Greenbrier East, winning by scores of 13-4 and 8-6.
The sweep of the twinbill culminated a week in which the Cougars rode the pitching of Daquon Shipe (4.1 innings) and Griffin Horowicz (2.2 innings) to a 3-1 win over Martinsburg. It was Jefferson’s second win in two tries over the state-ranked Bulldogs. Connor Bailey and Griffin Horowicz each had singles as Jefferson broke on top, 1-0. Sam Wabnitz scored the next run after he singled, stole second and came home as Sammy Roberts was thrown out at second trying to steal. Kellen Kinsler’s successful squeeze bunt got Josh Cienfuegos home with the third run.
The next night, the Cougars swamped Hedgesville, 11-1, in a five-inning mercy rule win. JJ Polvinale was 3-for-3 and scored three runs while Bailey, Roberts and Horowicz all collected two hits. Horowicz, Roberts and Noah Carter all drove in two runs.
Riley Morgan was the winning pitcher with his one-hit pitching with five strikeouts over his four innings of effective pitching.
Next, it took only 4.5 innings to defeat Berkeley Springs, 12-1, with Jarrett Day going four innings on the mound and Wabnitz weighing in with a 3-for-3 night at the plate. Wabnitz had four RBIs and scored twice. Roberts and Colton Smith were both 1-for-1 and Bailey scored twice and had a single.
On April 14, the Cougars stopped Frankfort, 12-4, in Short Gap. Jefferson posted 13 hits (Wabnitz was 3-for-5, Shipe 2-for-2, Roberts 2-for-3 and Kinsler had a hit, scored twice and drove in three runs).
In its last games before trekking to South Carolina, the Cougars topped Greenbrier East, 13-4 and 8-6, in a doubleheader played at Sager Field in Shenandoah Junction.
Roberts posted the pitching win with Horowicz getting a save in the opener where Horowicz had two doubles. Roberts two RBIs, Wabnitz scored twice and drove in two runs and Bailey scored three runs.
Roberts pitched four innings and Horowicz allowed just one unearned run in his three innings of work.
The Cougars rallied from a 3-2 deficit in winning the 8-6 verdict.
A four-run fifth inning uprising proved enough to finally overcome the earlier Spartan lead.
Ethan Hall was credited with the win with his 2.2 innings of no-hit pitching. Wabnitz fanned six in his 2.2 innings.
Polvinale was 2-for-2 and Horowicz also had two hits. Hefner and Horowicz both scored two runs as the Cougars completed the week going 6-0.
After 19 games, the leading Jefferson hitters are Roberts (.475), Horowicz (.404), Wabnitz (.400) and Bailey (.400).
Bailey leads the team in runs scored with 28, followed closely by Wabnitz (24) and Horowicz (23). The RBI leader is Horowicz with 26, while Wabnitz has 23, Roberts 21 and Bailey 16.
Shipe has posted a 1.02 ERA and has a 3-0 record. Horowicz has recorded three saves, three wins against no losses and has an 0.46 ERA. Hall and Dylan Mabe are both 3-0 while Roberts, Morgan and Day are both 2-0.
