SHENANDOAH JUNCTION — Back in Shenandoah Junction after four games in four days in an annual tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C., Jefferson received route-going pitching performances in its first two games since returning to the Eastern Panhandle.

In stopping Frankfort for the second time in the 2022 season, the Cougars had pitcher Sammy Roberts go the complete-game distance in stopping Frankfort, 6-2, at Sager Field.

Roberts effectively spaced four hits while notching 10 strikeouts against the Mineral Countians. Both of Frankfort’s runs were unearned as Roberts, a senior righthander, walked only two and went through six shutout innings after a two-run Frankfort first.

By the end of the third inning, Jefferson had a 3-2 lead that it extended to 5-2 with an additional two runs in the fifth.

Limited to just four hits, the Cougars helped themselves to unearned runs when the Falcons committed six errors.

Roberts, Sam Wabnitz, Connor Bailey and J.J. Polvinale each had a Jefferson hit. Polvinale drove in a run.

The next evening at Sager Field, the opportunistic Cougars made the most of five hits to trim Musselman, 3-1. Jefferson owned a previous mercy-rule win over the Applemen.

Musselman had a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth when the Cougars plated two runs to grab their first lead of the game,

Righthander Griffin Horowicz limited the Applemen to only one hit in going seven innings. Horowicz fanned eight, walked three and the lone run he allowed was unearned.

In moving their overall record to 22-3, the Cougars stole four bases, including two by Bailey. Roberts collected two of the team’s five hits. Kellen Kinsler, Horowicz and Bailey each had a hit in the victory.

Last week closed with the Cougars traveling to Cooperstown, N.Y. and playing Pendleton County (Franklin, W.Va.) in single games on Friday and Saturday at historic Doubleday Field.

Matt Vickers was the only Jefferson player to get two hits in a 9-1 win on Friday afternoon. Noah Carter, Ty Dunkin and Josh Cienfuegos all had a hit.

The next morning, the Cougars fielded an all-underclassmen lineup and tripped the Wildcats, 16-2, in a five-inning mercy-rule game. Riley Morgan, Dylan Mabe and Cole Lewis all pitched in the win that boosted Jefferson’s record to 24-3 overall.

Morgan weighed in with two hits and the RBIs. Ryan Kelly, Colton Smith, Logan McCartney and Ty Vickers all had two hits in Jefferson’s 16-hit outing.

After playing at Washington on Monday, Jefferson was scheduled to face Spring Mills on Tuesday at Sager Field and complete its regular season with games on Thursday (Smithsburg, Md.) and this evening versus Mercersburg Academy (Pa.).

The Class AAA, Region II, Sectional tournament follows those games, where Washington and Hampshire join Jefferson in a three-team event.
