CHARLESTON — Isaiah Fritts, Lorelei Bangit and two sprint relay units from both the boys and girls teams gave Jefferson wins at the 2022 West Virginia State Track and Field Meet but it was other schools that stood atop their respective fields with the team championships.
Fritts sprinted a convincing victory in the boys 400, while Bangit outran the straining group of 400-meter sprinters in the Class AAA girls division.
The winning 4×100 relay foursome of Caleb Shelton, Spencer Powell, Keyshawn Robinson and Fritts did the honors in the shortest of the relays. Later on during the sunny afternoon it was the same four-man group getting another 10 team points for winning the 4×200 relay.
In the same sprint relays, the Jefferson girls (Arayia Maiben, Myah Powell-Utley, Trinity Blue and Bangit) topped the field in the 4×100. In taking first place in the 4×200 relay for 10 team points were Maiben, Blue, Bangit and Jayla Kidrick.
University High from Morgantown edged the Cougars for first place in the boys division. The Hawks counted 93 points and the Cougars were a close-up second with 88 points. University finished first in the 4×800 relay and Jefferson was second. Jefferson was second in the meet-closing 4×400 relay and University was third.

Giving the Cougars eight team points for second-place finishes were Robinson (both in the 100 and 200) and two relay teams — the 4×800 (Justin Gottlieb, Fox Faunce, Conner Myers and Christian Gottlieb) and the 4×400 relay (Tay’Shaun Roper, Christian Gottlieb, Chase Brown and Justin Gottlieb).
Supplying eight team points with second-place finishes in the girls division were Bangit (200 meters), the shuttle hurdles unit comprised of T’Asya Jay, Elizabeth Marrs, Hope Gestl and Briauna Goins and then Goins in the shot put.
Morgantown weathered any challenges to their girls team championship effort with a points-grabbing group of middle distance and distance runners that dominated the competition.
University followed a similar script with its list of middle distance and distance runners in topping the boys field.
Both Jefferson’s girls and boys had posted team wins in the Class AAA, Region II Meet held on May 12 at Spring Mills High.
