The best teams plunge through the playoffs and are seen by more people. Any team reaching the state playoff threshold will see more of its individual players given more post-season recognition and honors.
Jefferson plowed through the playoffs, winning its Sectional baseball tournament and then ousting Martinsburg to win its Regional, thus gaining entry into the four-team state tournament in Charleston.
The Class AAA All-State team, selected by writers from around the state, placed Jefferson’s pitcher-third baseman Griffin Horowicz and pitcher-first baseman Sammy Roberts on the first-team.
There were 15 players selected by the writers to the first team.

Bailey
Gaining “honorable mention” status were seniors Connor Bailey and Sam Wabnitz.
Horowicz posted a 6-0 pitching record and a miniscule 0.48 earned run average. He also had four saves. As a hitter, he batted .314 when also playing at third base. He drove in 35 runs.
Roberts finished the 2022 season with a .369 batting average, while posting a 6-1 pitching record and a 2.71 earned run average.
Bailey was used primarily as an outfielder and led the Cougars with a .390 batting average. Wabnitz batted .368 with 33 runs batted in while scoring 32 times.
Jefferson finished with a 33-5 overall record.
Winning the Class AAA softball state championship helped showcase the talents of several Jefferson players, whose state tournament exploits and regular season offensive numbers and pitching stats made them candidates for the All-State teams
Lacie Lewis gained first-team honors from the sports writers when she produced a .567 batting average along with 24 RBIs and three homers.
Freshman Rebecca Munslow won two games as pitcher at the state tournament, including an 11-inning win over John Marshall in the opening round of the four-team event. She was placed on the second team by the state’s writers.
Helping the Cougars to both regular season and tournament success were the .442 batting average of Shelby Harris and the .413 batting average of Brooke Allen.
Selected to the all-tournament team at the state event were Munslow, Lewis, Kalee Dalton and Taylor Presley. In one of the games at the state tournament, Dalton went a rousing 4-for-4 and drove in three runs..
The softball Cougars completed their dominant season, with a 30-5 overall record.
