Late scores balloon Cougars’ win over Spring Mills

SPRING MILLS — For nearly all of Jefferson’s 33-0 win over homestanding Spring Mills, the game was completely dominated by penalties, fumbles, pass interceptions and the Cougar defense.

Then, with Jefferson ahead late in the second half, 14-0, and Spring Mills showing no offense when standing against the Cougar defense, suddenly three additional touchdowns sprung from the Jefferson offense.

Jefferson had ceded a few first downs and little yardage to the harassed Cardinal offense. And, with the Cardinal marching band assembled near midfield at halftime, the Cougars lead seemed invincible, at only 14-0.

The Cardinals couldn’t establish the run. And they couldn’t counter with much passing. Any speed or quickness seen was all with Jefferson.

Chase Hagaman, Nolan Meehleib, Wyatt Shively, Nycere Jacobs, Andrew Study, Evan Tewell, Alejandro Martinez, Keyshawn Robinson and company dominated the field, and even when the Cougars weren’t threatening to score, they stymied any offensive attempts brought by the Cardinals.

Jefferson had first-half touchdowns on a 13-yard pass from Dylan Harich to Isaiah Fritts and a nine-yard run by Tay’Shaun Roper.

Spring Mills could never threaten. It sputtered badly because of penalties, fumbles and interceptions, and then finally with punts of 12 and 15 yards.

With much of the crowd already gone or loading their vehicles in the parking lot, the Cougars pushed their lead to three, then four and then five touchdowns — two of their scores coming in the final 3:30 minutes of play.

The late-game scores came from Fritts on a 25-yard pass from Harich, a 32-run by Wyatt Shively and Roper’s second rushing score that came with about a minute remaining. Harich finished with two touchdown passes.

Now with a 2-2 overall record, Jefferson has games coming soon against North Hagerstown (tonight at 7 p.m. in Shenandoah Junction) and South Hagerstown (at School Stadium in Hagerstown on Sept. 30).

Spring Mills is also 2-2 with its wins coming against Washington and South Hagerstown.

North Hagerstown (2-1 overall, but a seven-touchdown loser to Jefferson in 2021), Martinsburg and Hedgesville are remaining Jefferson opponents with winning records.

South Hagerstown, James Wood and Washington — future Cougar opponents — have losing records.
