Jefferson easily stops any Rebel uprising

HAGERSTOWN, Md. — Rain threatened to sodden conditions or even hamper any version of quickness or speed as Jefferson prepared to play host South Hagerstown at 6 p.m. at School Stadium last Friday.
However, the rain held off until the very end of the evening . . . and by the time it dripped down on the fans scattered through the mostly empty bleachers on both sides of the grass field, Jefferson had long secured a win over the Rebels.
Jefferson won its third consecutive game, moving its overall record to 4-2, with a 48-6 decision over the Rebels, who left the deteriorating conditions with a 1-4 record.
The Rebels couldn’t find any answers when facing Jefferson’s spread offense that featured receivers spaced from hashmark to hashmark.
Cougar quarterback Dylan Harich delivered three TD passes — giving him seven scoring throws in the past two games, the previous TD splurge against North Hagerstown High.

Harich’s scoring passes went to Spencer Powell (14 yards), Evan Tewell (12 yards) and Keyshawn Robinson (43 yards).
Harich also added a short three-yard TD run. And Tewell counted scoring runs of three and one yards.
Jefferson’s final points came on a fumble return that lifted its scoring total to 48 points.
The Rebels counted their limited point total on Lewis Berry’s 17-yard TD pass to Lance Ford that cut Jefferson’s lead to 14-6 in the second quarter.
Defensively, the stingy Cougars wouldn’t allow much at all on the ground to the troubled Rebels.
Persistent rain was in the weather forecast. But the leaden skies kept quiet until the verdict had long been sealed. When the rain came, it wasn’t heavy and even quit before the final horn blared from the north end scoreboard.
With the precision-like disposal of the Rebels, Jefferson remained firmly in the Top 16 teams in West Virginia’s Class AAA ranks — meaning if the 2022 playoffs began today the Cougars would be involved.
This week, the Cougars will see James Wood (Winchester, Va.), a team that got into the win column for the first time last week when it won against host North Hagerstown.
In closing out the regular season, the Cougars will also see defending state champion Martinsburg, then Hedgesville (which surrendered 60 points in losing to Martinsburg last week) and lastly Washington, which defeated Park View (Va.) to get its lone win of the season.
And in sweeping its two games against the two Hagerstown schools, the Cougars outscored the Marylanders by a combined 90-12 score.
