SHEPHERDSTOWN — The annual Alumni Breakfast held on the lawn of McMurran Hall had been consumed.

The Homecoming Parade had successfully coursed down German Street.

It was time for the overflow crowd of 6,471 to be entertained by the Shepherd vs. Millersville football game, at busting-at-the-seams Ram Stadium.

After the highly-ranked Rams poured five touchdowns on to the malfunctioning scoreboard in the second half, Shepherd had deflated Millersville’s upset balloon by making off with a 55-17 win.

With its streak-preserving win, the Rams moved to a 7-0 record and at the same time Millersville dipped to 2-5 and had its two-game win streak harshly snapped.

An uncharacteristic series of Shepherd mistakes inside the final minute of the first half had puzzled the massive crowd and sliced the Ram lead to only 21-17 at the intermission.

It was completely botched pass coverage and a Shepherd fumble caught in midair by a Marauder special teams player that he returned for a score that had chopped the Ram lead from 21-3 to 21-17 in a matter of just seconds.

But beginning with quarterback Tyson Bagent’s points-giving four-yard scramble that boosted the Shepherd lead back to 27-17, the entire second half’s complexion began to match the 72-degree temperature and ideal conditions for the wealth of spectators.

Donte Harrison provided his second defensive touchdown when he made a pass interception and returned it 29 yards for a blooming 34-17 Shepherd lead. In the first half, Harrison had picked up a Millersville fumble and ran 60 yards for the Rams’ third score.

Before the prosperous third quarter ended — at least for the opportunistic Rams — Ronnie Brown sprinted 76 yards through a well-accepted hole on the left side of the Millersville interior and gifted Shepherd with breathing room, 41-17 lead.

The third period ended. But not the continuing Shepherd scoring.

Bagent would scramble for a first down at the Marauder 30, Quickly, he would find Brian Walker at the one. And then Blake Hartman drove in to score, improving the count to 48-17.

Another reserve running back, Avaughn Holley, burst untouched through the Marauder defense and sailed 53 yards, to Shepherd’s final points.

Shepherd had badly gouged Millersville in the second half, outscoring the visitors, 34-0, and romping off to this weekend, when the Rams travel to West Chester to see the special team exploits of punt/kickoff returner Phil Poquie and successful place kicker Sean Henry that the Golden Rams show all opponents.

It might have been the 532 yards of total offense, eight touchdowns and 28-11 advantage in first downs the Rams showed that dizzied the scoreboard. Or it could have been Brown’s 133 rushing yards, Bagent’s 275 passing yards or the 275 rushing yards the Rams achieved, that short-circuited the hulking end zone device.

Thousands of celebrants exited Ram Stadium — some headed to further Homecoming events and some just enjoying the weather-perfect fall afternoon.

However, West Chester and its home crowd could have other ideas in mind for the undefeated Shepherd season this weekend.
