SHEPHERDSTOWN — Paced by the two wins of Nick Lugo in the 100 butterfly and the 200 freestyle, Jefferson High School’s boys swim team won the AAA Region II Swim Meet held last Saturday in the Shepherd University Wellness Center.

Lugo’s double wins in individual races helped the Cougars to a team point total of 115 and a 33-point win over runner-up Washington, which scored 82 points.

The next three team finishes showed Hedgesville (78 points), Spring Mills (67 points) and Fairmont Senior (56 points) in descending order.

Next up for the Cougars will be the State Swim Meet to be staged at the Mylan Park Aquatic Center in Morgantown from Feb. 16 through Feb. 18.

In the girls division of the Region II Meet, Fairmont Senior outdistanced the field with a meet-winning 136 points.

Finishing in second through fifth places in the girls division were Spring Mills (96 points), Washington (67 points), Martinsburg (59 points) and Jefferson (47 points). None of Jefferson’s swimmers won any of the individual races nor did the Cougars win any of the relays.

In the other three regions that will send boys swimmers to Mylan Park for the State Meet, it was Parkersburg South winning the Region I event with 133 points, just edging city rival Parkersburg (130 points) and also third-place Morgantown (90 points), Region III champion Robert C. Byrd with its 106 points (edging Bridgeport’s 95 points) and the Region IV champion George Washington (139 points), which brushed past Huntington (119 points).

Annual team leaders George Washington and Parkersburg South seem to have a slight edge over Parkersburg and Huntington in the upcoming boys State Meet.

Jefferson’s Lugo did well at the 2022 State Meet, leading the Cougars in individual race points achieved.

Parkersburg South is the defending boys state champion and George Washington is the defending girls state champion from the 2022 State Meets.
