Jefferson takes 7-3 record to Myrtle Beach tournament
SHENANDOAH JUNCTION — Another trip to Myrtle Beach in South Carolina was on the baseball itinerary of Jefferson High School’s baseball team this week, during the school’s spring break.
After scoring only a combined five runs in losses to area rivals Martinsburg, Hedgesville and Musselman, the Cougars reeled off consecutive wins over Washington, Grace Academy, Spring Mills and Moorefield to move their overall record to 7-3, before embarking on their annual trip down south.
This week’s South Carolina schedule had Jefferson facing McClancy (N.Y.), Waccamaw (S.C.) and Hi Point (N.C.), before a tournament-ending game today against an unknown team that will be paired with Jefferson, after each team has played three games.
Reliable low-walk pitching has been the signature of this team, so far.
In Jefferson’s seven wins, three have featured shutout pitching.
Only Musselman has managed more than three runs against the miserly Jefferson pitchers.
Caleb Fletcher, Ryan Hefner, Riley Morgan and Daquon Shipe have been able to throw strikes and keep runners off of base, for the most part.
Jefferson’s yearly reliance on stealing bases and classic base running skills has been in evidence again this season.
This team doesn’t have the daily power to drown opponents with long balls or an abundance of extra base hits.
When the Cougars get back from South Carolina, they will face a long schedule of road games, taking them to Greenbrier East, Spring Valley down near Kentucky, Frankfort in Mineral County, Cumberland for games on a neutral field, Bridgeport, Warrenton (Va.) and Smithsburg in Washington County, Md.
In Jefferson’s Class AAA Section, the Cougars have beaten both Hampshire and Washington and have no losses. In games against Regional opponents, the Cougars have suffered all three of their losses, and have beaten only Spring Mills — a school that has never beaten Jefferson in baseball.
The annual Sectional Tournament is coming up in less than a month, and is a prelude to Regional and State Tournament play.
The top-seeded team in the Sectional will receive home games the first time it faces either of the other two schools.
Jefferson reached the State Tournament last season. And among the 12 state championships the school has achieved since its inaugural season in 1973, the last title came in 2016.
