All-state football selections include first-teamers Nolan Meehleib and Keyshawn Robinson
SHENANDOAH JUNCTION — State champion Martinsburg High School had six players named to the Class AAA combined first team offense and defense, selected again by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association.
State runner-up Princeton had three selections and Jefferson High School’s Nolan Meehleib and Keyshawn Robinson were named to the all-state first team defense. Both Meehleib and Robinson are seniors.
The Martinsburg players selected to the first team offense were lineman EJ Hendrix and Murphy Clement, named as a utility player. Selected to the first team defense from Martinsburg were Rashad Reid, Xerxees Yancey and Nick Busky.
The West Virginia Sports Writers Association second team offense had two players from Martinsburg and one from Princeton. The second team defense had another Princeton athlete named.
A long list of players given “honorable mention” status had Jefferson’s Quinton Goins, Dylan Harich, Nycere Jacobs and Tay’Shaun Roper.
There were 87 players named to the “honorable mention” list.
Martinsburg had been the No. 3 seed in the field of 16 teams reaching the Class AAA playoffs. The Bulldogs defeated Parkersburg South, Jefferson, Huntington and Princeton on consecutive weekends to secure an undefeated and state championship season.
Princeton went 9-1 in the regular season and then defeated Oak Hill, Parkersburg and Bridgeport to reach the state championship game at Wheeling Island Stadium to face Martinsburg. In the state semifinals, Princeton won an epic and rousing 73-70 decision over Bridgeport. Martinsburg won, 57-13, over Princeton in the state finals.
Jefferson went 8-2 in its regular season, losing only to Sherando and Martinsburg. The No. 6 seeded Cougars topped Wheeling Park in Shenandoah Junction to begin the playoffs and then fell again to Martinsburg on the road in the quarterfinal round to finish off a 9-3 overall season.
