Versatile Cougars bounce out to 8-1 start to softball season
SHENANDOAH JUNCTION — Pitcher-rich Jefferson High School has jumped out to an 8-1 record this softball season, taming Regional opponents Washington High School, Hedgesville High School, Musselman High School, Spring Mills High School and Hampshire High School along the rose-covered way.
Becca Munslow, a 2023 Class AAA first-team All-State pitcher, once again is one of the team’s statistical and emotional leaders. Munslow also plays third base and recently went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs in a lop-sided 12-4 win over Spring Mills.
Munslow has a dugout full of teammates who are helping guide the Cougar offense and also get Jefferson well-pitched, low-scoring wins.
Kalee Dalton, a pitcher/infielder. and Brooke Allen, another pitcher/infielder, have provided consistent offense and several pitching wins.
Dalton went 3-for-4 versus Spring Mills and Allen clubbed three doubles and drove in three runs in subduing the Cardinals.
Sophomore outfielder Savannah Smith had a pair of hits in a 5-4 win over Petersburg High School and sophomore catcher Madison Clark has been a consistent performer. Freshman Jersey Rummel provided two hits in a romp over Hedgesville and another two hits in the 3-1 win over Washington.
Outfielder Chloe Cowan was 2-for-3 in an early-season, 10-2 success versus Musselman, during which she drove in three runs.
Alissa Darr and Parker Hozhabri have also provided Coach Lindsay Davis with lineup stability.
Jefferson’s lone loss came at the hands of highly regarded John Marshall High School, a team the Cougars will face again later in the regular season.
Munslow’s 12-strikeout pitching performance in a 9-2 win over Petersburg came in the same game where she went 2-for-4 at the plate. Her hits were a triple and double.
Last year the Cougars went 21-9 . . . and seem aimed toward an even better regular season in 2024.
The team roster is filled with underclass starters who should improve and do even more winning as game experience gets them ready for postseason tournaments.
