HAGERSOWN, Md. — A razor-thin team win by Jefferson High School become the shiniest moments at the 29th Annual Chuck Zonis Invitational Track and Field Meet held this past Saturday at North Hagerstown (Md.) High School’s Callas Stadium.
Mostly disregarding the blustery chill that owned the morning, the Cougars used three sprint wins from Keyshawn Robinson, as well as his winning anchor leg on the prevailing 4×100 meter relay race, to earn a half-point win over Oakland Mills (Md.) of Howard County.
The Cougars finished with 163 points to Oakland Mills High School’s 162.5.
Robinson sprinted to times of 10.91 (100), 21.93 (200) and 48.02 (400), before helping post a team win in 43.06 in the 4×100 meter relay race — the shortest of the sprint relays.
Giving the Cougars vital wins were Owen Thompson in the 800 meter race with his prevailing time of 2:00.56, Conner Myers in the 1,600 meter race with a quick-paced 4:23.8 and Reese Hickey in the 3,200 meter race with a winning time of 10:12.34.

Across the board, Jefferson gleaned points from Thompson’s second-place showing in the 1,600 meter race, Nolan Meehleib’s second place in the discus and the 4×200 meter relay race.
When a team wins the lengthy day by a half-point then the third-places gotten by Tony Allen in the 200 meter race, Myers in the 800 meter race and the 4×400 meter relay race prove to be of utmost importance.
Jefferson’s girls finished fourth with 91 points, while Smithsburg (Maryland) ran, jumped and generally excelled in getting that team win with 135.5 points.
Hannah Phillips had a satisfying win in the 800 meter race and was second in the 1,600 meter race for her distance efforts. Phillips posted a winning time of 2:20.58 in the 800.
The 4×100 meter relay unit outsprinted that field, winning with a time of 50.31.

Scoring second-place points were Jazmyn Taylor in the 100 meter, Jasmine Matthews in the shotput and the runner-up 4×200 meter relay race.
Third places in the girls portion of the annual event were earned by Imani Wood in the 200 meter, Peyton Thacker in the shot put, the distance medley relay and Jasmine Matthews in the discus. The distance medley relay is not an event held in West Virginia meets.
The meet was held in raw weather conditions that tempted athletes to bundle up against the wind when not warming up or actually competing, but some of the times were akin to near-perfect conditions seen on much warmer and comfortable mornings.
