MOOREFIELD — Jefferson High School’s softball team has only three losses this season, and all three defeats were inflicted by John Marshall High School.
In their latest games, the Cougars traveled to Moorefield High School for the Bub Riggleman Tournament.
John Marshall wasn’t there. So Jefferson didn’t lose to any of the other teams in the field.
In pool play, the Cougars had little or no problem beating Hampshire 15-0 and then Tucker County 17-0.
Once the Cougars joined the single elimination portion of the event, they easily won three more games — posting a 10-0 win over host Moorefield, stopping Keyser High School, 12-4, and then earning a 15-2 win over Pendleton County High School in the championship final.
The five-game tour de force in the Bub Riggleman Tournament left the Cougars with an overall record of 16-3.
An all-tournament team was selected and announced following Jefferson’s win in the championship game.
Named to that all-tournament team from Jefferson were Kalee Dalton, Becca Munslow and Jersey Rummel.
Munslow authored scads of shutout innings with her near-flawless pitching and Dalton and Rummel provided the Cougars with a tournament-long series of run-producing hits.
Having already posted wins over Sectional rivals Washington High School and Hampshire High School, the Cougars return to this area to face other Regional opponents from Berkeley County, as well as Washington and Hampshire, in other regular season Sectional games.
John Marshall is no longer standing as a regular season roadblock, but should the Cougars find titles in both the Sectional and Regional tournaments, they could see that team a fourth time in the 2024 state tournament.
The Cougars own a tightly played 3-1 win over Washington in the previous game the two county rivals played earlier in the regular season.
At 16-3 overall, the team has received some state recognition and has been given rankings in state polls of Class AAA teams.
