Large meet in northern Virginia has both Jefferson track and field teams finishing third
CHANTILLY, Va. — Last Saturday was not an ideal time for noticeable track times nor personal best efforts in field events. It was chilly and always threatened with rain showers at Chantilly High School in northern Virginia where the Cassel’s XBC Track Experience took place for the 22 assembled high schools.
Jefferson High School’s boys team finished third in the large field, as did its girls team.
Patriot High School was a 30-point team winner in the boys division. Chantilly finished second with 66 points and then came Jefferson with its 51 points.
In the girls division, Alexandria City High School was the team champion, with 86 points. Patriot finished in second place, with 71 points, and Jefferson came in third place, with 65 points.
Jefferson had Keyshawn Robinson win an individual event when he ran a 49.19 to take the 400 meters.
Also, the 4×800 relay team that had Owen Thompson, Shane Burkhardt, Azmani Jackson and Levi Young bested the large field in winning with a 8:45.41 time. The youthful foursome has three underclassmen including two freshmen and a sophomore.
Finishing second in another relay was the foursome of 4×100 sprinters, who were second in 43.69 with Tony Allen, Caleb Shelton, Tay’Shaun Roper and Keyshawn Robinson. Robinson came in third place in the 100 meter, with his time of 10.92. Conner Myers recorded a fourth place in the 800 middle distance run in 2:00.70.
The Jefferson girls had wins from Jazmyn Taylor in both the long jump and the 100 meter. Taylor outleaped the field with her 16-foot effort in the long jump and sprinted past the 100 meter field in 12.66. Another Cougar success came from Imani Wood, whose time of 26.36 bested the field in the 200.
Hannah Phillips maintained her seasonal supremacy in distance races, by winning the 800 meter race, in 2:17.16, and placing second in the 1,600 meter race, with her time of 5:06.02.
Imani Wood finished second in the 100 meter race, in 12.84. The 4×100 relay unit comprised of Arayia Maiben, Imani Wood, Jayla Kidrick and Jazmyn Taylor also recorded a second place.
Jefferson’s recorded times, distances and heights so far this spring make both its teams the pre-meet favorites in the fast-approaching Class AAA, Region 2 Meet coming on May 10.
