SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. — A three-touchdown second quarter gave Shepherd University a working lead by halftime of its conference win over Shippensburg University on Saturday afternoon.

When the Rams continued with their shutout in the second half at Seth Grove Stadium, they had a confidence-building 38-0 win over the Red Raiders and moved their record to 3-1.

Shippensburg was limited to marginal offense, with only 177 total yards, and had suffered seven sacks from always pressuring Rams.

After Malakai Brown’s 57-yard bolt from scrimmage lifted Shepherd to an early 7-0 lead after one period and then second quarter scores from Barry Hill, Brown again and Miles Greer’s 62-yard punt return score, shoved the Rams to a significant 28-0 lead at halftime.

Quarterback Lek Powell threw a 57-yard TD pass to Cam Dorner. Freshman specialist Keith Baker toed a 37-yard field goal to complete the humid afternoon’s scoring.

The host Red Raiders never found any consistent offense against the continual pressure on its short parade of quarterbacks. The miniscule 21 rushing yards the Red Raiders measured did not seem to disturb Shepherd at all.

Sacks and hurries by the Ram defense almost became expected in the game that featured numerous punts by both sides.

Shippensburg had some little chance, until Hill’s touchdown catch and Brown’s short run moved the score to 21-0.

A timid sprinkle during the halftime show from the Shippensburg University Marching Band chased many spectators away as Shepherd led, 28-0.

JT Kouame, with 13 tackles, and Harold O’Neal, with nine tackles, were Shepherd’s statistical leaders, but there were many others who hounded the quarterbacks and running backs into submission.

Shippensburg was still searching its ranks for a serviceable quarterback after earlier losses. There were no real answers found in the blanking it took from Shepherd.

Conference opponent Lock Haven visits Monte Cater Field this Saturday for another in the series of games against PSAC East Division teams.

The collection of Shepherd defenders will again do their best to give the visitors their attention, as the quickly moving season nearly reaches its halfway point.
