SHEPHERDSTOWN — Once it got into the thick of its conference schedule against fellow East Division teams, Shepherd University’s volleyball team had a nine-match skein and improved upon its 17-4 overall record.

The season began successfully enough, before a four-match tournament at Indiana (Pa.) brought four consecutive losses tumbling in on the Rams.

But once that event was completed, Shepherd began to see mostly East Division teams in its own conference. It began reeling off win after win, to now stand at 8-0 in conference matches and in first place.

The early-season tournament losses had been to Daemen, Pitt-Johnstown, Indiana (Pa.) and Chestnut Hill.

After tonight’s match against East Stroudsburg, the Rams are at home again tomorrow at 5 p.m. when Kutztown visits the Butcher Center.

A solid group of out-of-state players have been Shepherd’s statistical leaders so far.

Joi Fairweather, a 5-foot-10 senior from Tamarac, Fla. has the team’s most kills with her 194. Rylee Lenz (a 6-foot-1 sophomore from Bohemia Manor (Md.) High School has been credited with 191 kills.

Sophia Ryan (a 5-foot-11 sophomore from Monroe, N.Y.), Jordan Pryor (a 5-foot-7 sophomore from Middletown, Md.), Amya Davis (a 5-foot-7 sophomore from Cortlandt, N.Y.) and Sydney Babb (a 5-foot-11 senior from Germantown, Md.) have trailed Fairweather and Lenz in points accounted for, but are also some of the team leaders in that category.

Macy Buso (a 5-foot-11 junior from Parker, Colo., has been far and away the Rams’ leader in sets with her 712 total.

Depending on its success rate in its remaining East Division games and then the PSAC tournament, Shepherd could win its way into the NCAA Division II playoffs that come after the regular season is completed.

One loss after its first 14 games has brought optimism and confidence to the Shepherd women’s soccer team.

The Rams were still unbeaten after their initial nine games in the 2024 season.

Now 9-1-4 after 14 games, Shepherd waited until Oct. 9 to withstand its first (and only) loss of the season, a 1-0 defeat to West Chester.

In its four games since the lone loss to West Chester, the Rams are 3-0-1 in their bobtailed run of success.

After a game on Wednesday against winless Mansfield, the Rams will play host to Lock Haven tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. on Alumni Weekend.

The leading scorer has been Lydia Gable (Felton, Pa.) who has 23 points.
